OpenAI Raises $11 Billion, But Its Bigger Funding Ambition Faces a Reality Check
OpenAI has completed the first portion of its latest funding round, with the total investment potentially reaching $20 billion in the coming weeks.
OpenAI Funding: Aritificial Intelligence research company OpenAI has reportedly raised another $11 billion at a valuation of $1.25 trillion, which is a significant feat in the AI business growth. The remainder of the investment could take the total funding to $20bn, with further funds due in the coming weeks.
The $11bn is just the first tranche of a larger funding round, said a report by the Bloomberg. It cites its sources saying the funds had been sent to the company by Friday, November 6. OpenAI have not commented on the report.
OpenAI Lowers Its Original Funding Goal
The most recent funding round is a world of difference from what OpenAI originally set out to do. Their initial target was to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of around $1.4 trillion. That is all been revised amid a market sell-off and growing concerns about AI infrastructure spending and potential obstacles to data-centre construction. The revised plan is for the company to be worth $1.25trn, having raised $11bn so far. The reason for the shift in investor sentiment is clearly linked to the rapidly increasing cost of the AI infrastructure (data centres, compute, etc.) required to build and run the AI models, alongside wider concerns about the AI market.
Who is Investing in OpenAI?
The first round of funding included Coatue Management and T. Rowe Price, as per the media report. Other investors in the wider funding round include SoftBank Group, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz. A group of UAE investors have also joined the round. Bloomberg also reports that OpenAI is in talks with investment banks to raise further funds from HNIs and retail investors.
OpenAI's Previous $122 Billion Funding Round
Investment comes on the back of OpenAI's massive $122 billion funding round in March 2026, which valued the company at around $852b billion. The new $1.25 trillion valuation is a massive jump for the company in just eight months. That's even more interesting given the increasing competition in the AI space. OpenAI is up against Anthropic (makers of Claude), which is also preparing for a potential IPO.
As investors reassess valuations in the AI space, OpenAI's latest funding round clearly shows there is still appetite for AI companies. The space remains in high demand, despite ongoing debate over infrastructure costs and long-term profitability.
