Rahul Challenge to PM Modi: Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has renewed his call for an open debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while the government’s position is that Parliament remains the appropriate forum for such discussions. The exchange has drawn attention ahead of the Winter Session.

What Rahul Gandhi Said

In a video message posted on X on November 3, Mr. Rahul Gandhi said 24 hours had passed since his initial challenge and invited the Prime Minister to choose “any stage” and “any venue” for a public discussion. He said the proposed format could include the media, young people and a mutually chosen adjudicator.

“Choose any stage, any venue, and debate me on this- who is anti-national? Who has connections with foreign forces?” Mr Gandhi wrote in the post accompanying the video.

The challenge followed Mr Gandhi’s earlier X post on November 2, in which he alleged that the Prime Minister had received “foreign help” and called for an open debate “any stage, any time.”

And in his most recent post, Mr. Gandhi renewed the topic of debate, posting a poll.

Government and BJP Leaders' Response

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said: “Let Parliament function. We are ready to convene a special session to hold discussions on SIR. If you have the courage, come and engage in a discussion before the people of this country. Simply carrying a copy of the Constitution around does not equate to supporting it. One's conduct must be Constitutional,” PTI quoted him as saying at an event in Raipur on Tuesday, November 3. Shah also accused Rahul Gandhi of supporting the Maoists’ “Janatana Sarkar” and alleged that he had “mocked Parliament” by staging a “fake Parliament.”

He further said the government is prepared to discuss “every single issue” and proposed a special parliamentary session on SIR.

Amit Shah on X, congratulated Chhattisgarh during the State Celebrations.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, as reported by NDTV, said Mr Gandhi should raise the issues he wishes to discuss in Parliament, where he holds the position of Leader of the Opposition.

The Prime Minister’s office had not publicly responded to the specific debate proposal in the reports reviewed for this article.

What May Happen Next?

The immediate question is likely whether the issue moves from social media to the Lok Sabha. That would depend upon the Opposition formally seeking a discussion through parliamentary procedures and the government agreeing to allocate time.
