Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A Approved: Airport Link, 5 New Stations — All You Need to Know

New Delhi, June 10: The proposal of the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (June 10) during a cabinet meeting. The corridor will span 6.032 km, featuring five stations — four elevated and one underground. Once operational, the expansion will bring the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar's total active metro network to 77.63 km, making it one of the most connected urban transit systems in western India.
The project carries a total completion cost of Rs 2,169.04 crore, inclusive of interest during construction.
Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A: Five New Stations
The Phase 2A corridor will serve five stations along its route:
Ashram Road
Koteshwar Prachin Mandir
Sabarmati River
Sardar Nagar
Airport
The airport terminus is arguably the most significant addition — plugging a long-standing gap in the city's transit network and giving commuters a direct, affordable rail link to Ahmedabad's busiest travel hub.
What Changes for Commuters
The new corridor directly connects residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts, and the airport to the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro line. For daily commuters, this means fewer transfers, shorter travel times, and a genuine alternative to road transport — particularly on one of the city's most congested stretches.
The expansion also arrives at a strategically important moment. Sports infrastructure is likely to come up in the vicinity ahead of the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030, meaning the corridor will serve not just everyday commuters but also the surge of visitors those events will bring.
Less Traffic
Every commuter who shifts from a private vehicle to the metro takes one more car off Ahmedabad's roads. At scale, that matters significantly. The Phase 2A extension is expected to ease congestion on key arterial routes, cut average travel times, and improve road safety across the city.
Economic Ripple Effects
Better connectivity tends to unlock economic activity in areas that previously sat just out of reach. Neighbourhoods near the five new stations — particularly those around Sardar Nagar and the airport corridor — stand to benefit from increased footfall, rising business activity, and fresh investment interest, the central government claimed.
Improved links between the airport, railway stations, and bus depots will also make the city more navigable for professionals, tourists, and businesses alike, compressing the time and cost of moving across Ahmedabad.
