Anthropic Pulls Latest AI Models Following New US Export Restrictions

Washington, June 13: Artificial intelligence company Anthropic said on Friday it had temporarily taken its newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, offline after receiving a directive from the Trump administration aimed at restricting access to advanced AI technology by foreign nationals.

The move represents one of the most significant US government efforts so far to control the global distribution of cutting-edge artificial intelligence systems amid growing national security concerns.

Anthropic launched Fable 5 earlier this week, making it broadly available to users. The model is a scaled-down version of Mythos 5, a more advanced system whose access has already been tightly restricted by the company due to cybersecurity risks.

In a statement, Anthropic said it disagreed with the government's decision and criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the directive.

The company said it received the order from US authorities on Friday afternoon and that officials did not specify the national security concerns underlying the action.

“We believe the government should have the ability to block unsafe deployments, as part of a statutory process that is transparent, fair, clear, and grounded in technical facts,” Anthropic said. “This action does not adhere to those principles.”

Anthropic described the situation as a “misunderstanding” and said it was working with government officials to clarify the issue and restore access to the models as quickly as possible.

The US Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The development comes 10 days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a framework for the federal government to assess the national security implications of the most advanced AI systems before their public release. Under the order, AI developers may voluntarily submit their models for government review for up to 30 days prior to deployment.

The latest restrictions highlight the increasing scrutiny of advanced AI technologies as governments seek to balance innovation with national security concerns.
