CCTV, Confrontation, Blockade: How Baruipur Locals Made Breakthrough in Minor's Rape-Murder Case Before Police

The episode exposed a deep public distrust of the police, with residents taking the investigation, and, eventually, punishment, into their own hands.

When an 11-year-old girl left her home in Baruipur, West Bengal, to buy a birthday gift for a friend, her family expected her to return within hours. When she failed to come back, panic set in. They reported her missing to the police, but the breakthrough came not from the investigation, but from local residents.

The girl had gone missing on Saturday afternoon. After reviewing CCTV footage, locals identified a man in a blue cap who had last been seen with her. They confronted him and allegedly forced him to reveal the location where the child's body had been dumped, as showed a viral video on social media.

On Sunday, the man led residents to a pond near Surjyapur Haat, where they recovered the girl's body from inside a sack. The viral footage showed a man pointing at the pond, where the girl was found.

The discovery sparked outrage. After identifying the body, the girl's family alleged that she had been gang raped - an allegation that preliminary post-mortem findings appear to support. They placed her body on the Baruipur–Joynagar Road and blocked traffic, refusing to allow officials to approach.

The protest soon turned violent. One suspect was lynched by an enraged mob, tyres were set alight, and several police vehicles were vandalised. Protesters demanded the immediate arrest of everyone involved and the harshest punishment permitted under the law.

The blockade ended only after the Inspector General of Police assured the family and residents that a thorough investigation would be carried out, every person connected to the crime would be arrested, and the accused would face the maximum punishment if convicted.

Police Probe

Police have since arrested four people in connection with the case.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage that allegedly shows the girl being taken away by four individuals. Officers are analysing the footage alongside forensic evidence and witness statements to establish each suspect's identity and role in the crime.

"We are pursuing all available leads. CCTV footage, forensic evidence and witness statements are being examined. Those involved will be identified and arrested at the earliest," a senior police officer said.

Preliminary Post-Mortem Findings

According to a senior police officer, the preliminary post-mortem examination found injuries to the girl's private parts, along with scratch and bite marks on several parts of her body.

The report also indicated that she had suffered a severe head injury, either after being struck with a heavy object or after her head was slammed against a hard surface.

Crucially, the examination suggested that the child was still alive when she was thrown into the pond. Doctors found water in her lungs and stomach, indicating that she had inhaled water before dying.

Police sources said the post-mortem concluded that excessive blood loss from the head injury, combined with drowning, caused her death.
