New Delhi, September 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is celebrating his 76th birthday on Thursday, with political leaders from across India and several foreign leaders extending greetings. While most messages praised Modi’s leadership and bilateral ties, some Indian opposition leaders used the occasion to raise political issues.
Global leaders extend birthday wishes
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wished Modi on X, referring to him as her friend and wishing him “health, energy, and success”.
“Happy birthday to my friend @narendramodi, to whom I wish health, energy, and success,” Meloni wrote, adding that Italy and India were strengthening their “deep bond of friendship” and working towards greater cooperation and prosperity.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also extended birthday wishes to Modi, praising his leadership and highlighting the growing relationship between India and Israel.
“Happy birthday, Narendra!” Netanyahu wrote on X. He said Modi’s leadership had transformed India into a “world power” and described the relationship between the two countries as an “unprecedented partnership”.
Netanyahu added that the friendship between Israel and India had “never been stronger” and wished Modi “many more years of leadership, health and fulfilment”.
Indian leaders send birthday greetings
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi kept his message brief.
“PM Narendra Modi ji, happy birthday. Wishing you good health and a long life,” Gandhi wrote on X.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin also extended his wishes to Modi, saying he was working towards building a stronger India.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India was progressing towards the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ under Modi’s leadership. He highlighted infrastructure development, digital connectivity, welfare initiatives, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Singh said Modi had placed public service and good governance at the centre of the country’s development journey. He wished the Prime Minister good health, longevity and strength to continue serving the country.
Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal took a critical view in his birthday message.
Referring to his allegations of voter-list tampering in Delhi, Kejriwal wrote on X: “So, this is how Modi ji won Delhi. By massively tampering with the voter lists. Congratulations Modi ji for killing Indian democracy. Happy birthday @narendramodi.”
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha wished Modi on his 76th birthday and praised his leadership, describing his journey from a humble background to the country’s highest elected office as inspiring.
In a post on X, Chadha said good leadership required vision, tenacity and the ability to unite people behind a common goal and a sense of hope. He said Modi had helped create a more confident India and was working towards the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’.
Chadha wished the Prime Minister good health, vigour and many more years of service to the country and its citizens.
Union minister Kiren Rijiju also wished Modi good health and a long life.
“We pray for Modi ji's good health and long life because he is the man who is leading us to developed India,” Rijiju wrote.
Several other prominent leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, also extended their wishes to Modi.
Shah described Modi as a symbol of “tireless hard work, sacrifice and foresight”.
In a post on X, Shah said Modi had made “karma his sadhana” and national duty the mission of his life. He described the Prime Minister’s journey of service and dedication as an inspiration to millions.
Shah expressed hope that India would continue to reach new heights of development under Modi’s leadership and work towards the goal of becoming a developed country by 2047. He also wished the Prime Minister good health and a long life.
