OpenAI is taking another step toward making conversations with AI more natural. With the release of GPT-Live, ChatGPT can listen and respond in real time, users can interrupt, pause or change course mid conversation just like talking to another person. The AI can respond instantly without breaking the flow of the conversation, rather than waiting for the user to finish speaking. This update is more than a voice upgrade.

"We trained these new models to respond safely, using the same infrastructure we rely on for training our flagship models. They can also delegate more complex work to our other models, and when they do, the resulting work will reflect the safety training of the underlying model that is doing that work. The evaluations in this card describe how the new GPT-Live-1 models perform with delegation, matching the deployment context," said Chat-GPT in a press release.

The feature is rolling out on Android, iOS and web. Go, Plus and Pro plan users will get the full GPT-Live experience, while free users will get a lighter GPT-Live Mini version. OpenAI also stated that more capabilities, including richer multimodal interactions, will be introduced in future updates.

The biggest change for users is simple: AI is no longer just answering questions. It’s starting to have conversations in a way that feels faster, more responsive and more like how humans naturally talk. Whether this will become the new norm for AI assistants remains to be seen, but GPT-Live is one of the biggest steps forward by OpenAI towards human like interaction.

Competing Siri, Alexa

The move is also a sign that OpenAI faces growing competition from traditional voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa. While those assistants mostly follow commands, GPT-Live is designed to understand context, respond naturally as well as handle complex conversations without breaking the flow.

Experts in the field regard this as another step toward AI assistants that are less like tools and more like digital companions.
