By Mahima Katal Dubai, June 3: An Indian national was killed and several others were injured after Kuwait International Airport came under attack on Tuesday, Kuwaiti authorities said.
The Embassy of India in Kuwait expressed condolences over the death and said it was coordinating closely with local authorities to assist the victim's family and provide support to those injured.
"Embassy of India in Kuwait expresses its deepest condolences at the tragic demise of an Indian national due to an attack on the airport in Kuwait today. We are closely coordinating with the Kuwaiti authorities to extend all possible support and assistance to the bereaved family as well as those injured," the embassy said in a post on X.
The latest casualty takes the number of Indian deaths linked to the ongoing Iran-US conflict to at least 10 since hostilities escalated on February 28.
According to Kuwait's Interior Ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Nasser Bousleeb, several hostile drones targeted Terminal 1 (T1) of Kuwait International Airport.
"The attack resulted in the death of one traveller and injuries to several workers and travellers," Bousleeb said, adding that airport facilities and operational infrastructure sustained significant damage.
Following the attack, Kuwait suspended air traffic operations. Directorate General of Civil Aviation spokesperson Abdullah Al-Rajhi told state-run KUNA news agency that flights were diverted to nearby airports and operations would remain suspended until further notice.
Health Ministry spokesperson Dr Abdullah Al-Sund said seven hospitals had received 63 injured persons following the attack. The injured included civilians, airport employees and passengers.
He added that seven patients underwent urgent major surgical procedures, while several others required minor surgeries.
The airport strike comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States in the Gulf region.
Earlier this year, another Indian national was killed in Kuwait when Iranian strikes hit a power and water desalination plant on March 30.
Last month, an Indian sailor died and several others were injured after a wooden dhow caught fire near the Strait of Hormuz.
In March, an Indian citizen was killed and another injured after missile-interception debris fell in Abu Dhabi. Another Indian national died in missile and drone attacks on Riyadh on March 18, while two Indians were killed in an attack on an industrial area in Oman on March 13.
Three Indian seafarers were also killed in attacks on merchant vessels during the initial phase of the conflict, while one Indian citizen remains missing.
