New Delhi, September 30: The family of an 80-year-old Mumbai man who died four years ago has preserved his remains, spending more than Rs 50 lakh in the process, police said on Wednesday.
Police have ruled out foul play, saying the family kept the remains due to "deep emotional attachment".
The man died in 2022 after suffering from cancer, kidney failure and other age-related ailments. His family initially kept his body in a freezer at their home in Mumbai's Malad area, an official from Kurar police station said.
According to police, the man's wife and two children, including a daughter who practises law, decided not to perform his final rites.

When their residential building was taken up for redevelopment, the family moved the remains to a local dispensary, which shut down about a month ago, the official said.
"The family has spent more than Rs 50 lakh to keep the body preserved and was exploring options to send it to a facility in the United States offering long-term cryopreservation services," a police official said.
Cryopreservation refers to the storage of cells, tissues or organs at extremely low temperatures to preserve them for extended periods.
The unusual case came to light after police received a tip-off. Officials said relatives and neighbours were aware of the arrangement and ruled out anything suspicious, noting that the man's death was natural.
No complaint has been filed in the case, the official said. The family is currently deciding whether to perform the final rites or send the remains to a facility abroad.
