Kolkata, June 24: Faruk Gazi, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Vice-Chairman of the Taki Municipality in North 24 Parganas district, has been arrested from Bengaluru after allegedly remaining absconding for an extended period amid multiple corruption-related accusations.

According to police officials, Gazi was apprehended following a tip-off received from a confidential source. A team of investigators tracked his location in Bengaluru, where he was reportedly hiding. After his arrest, he was produced before a local court and subsequently brought back to West Bengal on transit remand for further legal proceedings.

Faruk Gazi currently serves as the councillor of Ward No. 3 and Vice-Chairman of the Taki Municipality. He faces a series of serious allegations, including forcible land grabbing, encroachment on government and riverine lands, extortion through the collection of alleged "cut money" from beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and intimidation of political opponents.

Investigators allege that Gazi was involved in the illegal occupation of public land and the misappropriation of government resources. He is also accused of threatening opposition party workers and supporters during the run-up to recent electoral contests in the state.

Authorities claim that the TMC leader had been evading arrest since allegations against him surfaced. His arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigations into corruption and land-related irregularities in the region.

Police officials have indicated that Gazi will be questioned regarding the allegations and his alleged role in the various cases registered against him. Further investigations are underway, and authorities are expected to examine documentary evidence, financial transactions, and land records linked to the accusations.

The arrest comes amid heightened political scrutiny over allegations of corruption and misuse of power involving local political leaders in West Bengal. Political reactions from both the ruling party and opposition groups are expected as the case progresses.

Investigation Continues

Law enforcement agencies are likely to seek custody of the accused for detailed interrogation. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests or further legal action if new evidence emerges during the course of the investigation.
