Kolkata, June 19: Major defection from the Trinamool Congress has occurred in Sonakhali, Basanti in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, where approximately 150 TMC workers and supporters left the party to join the Congress. Party flags were handed to them in the presence of Congress leadership during an event held in Sonakhali.

The defectors claim that following Trinamool's electoral debacle in the state, the party's very existence is in deep crisis. They have aligned with the Congress to revitalize development work in the area, which had stalled.

Meanwhile, the Congress leadership views this defection very positively. They assert that this influx of people leaving Trinamool will further strengthen the Congress in the region. They believe that given the current political climate in the state, the Congress is once again gaining

acceptance among the public.

Congress leader Monirul Islam Sardar stated, "Many more will join the Congress following their lead; in fact, many are already expressing a desire to do so. It goes without saying that today's joining has significantly boaosted the Congress's strength in our area and block. More people will join. This will strengthen the hands of Rahul Gandhi, Adhir Chowdhury, and Shubhankar Sarkar."

Is the very existence of TMC in danger?

The humiliating drubbing received by the Trinamool Congress at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026;seems to be gradually changing the political ground realities in the state.

While West Bengal's erstwhile ruling party is suffering an implosion, other parties seem to be benefitting from the TMC's catastrophe.

The Lok Sabha delegation of the Trinamool Congress has moved towards supporting the NDA in the lower house of Parliament while many at the lower levels are looking to migrate to the Congress - since the BJP has closed the door for them, at least for the time being.

For the moment, it seems that the disintegration of the Trinamool cannot be halted. Beyond the legislative party, the parliamentary wing has also splintered, and the exodus continues at the grassroots level. Congress leaders had already opened their doors to Trinamool workers, and this move is now further strengthening their position.
