West Bengal: Wife of Former TMC Strongman Jahangir Khan Arrested for Allegedly Plotting Attack on Police Personnel

Diamond Harbour, West Bengal: Continuing its crackdown on criminal elements associated with the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime, the state government on Saturday arrested Rezina Bibi, the wife of former TMC strongman Jahangir Khan, for orchestrating attacks against police personnel after the arrest of her husband.

Rezina Bibi was taken into custody from Julpia village in Bishnupur block on Saturday morning and is expected to be produced before the Diamond Harbour Sub-Divisional Court later in the day.

Her husband, Jahangir Khan, was arrested shortly after the BJP came to power in West Bengal around a month ago. Since then, police have publicly paraded him on multiple occasions in the Falta Assembly constituency with a rope tied around his waist, drawing significant public attention.

According to police, Rezina Bibi played a key role in mobilising local residents and outsiders to protest against Jahangir Khan's public parading. She allegedly attempted to organise road blockades and lay siege to a local police station. Authorities have also accused her of instigating attacks on police personnel and central security forces, leading to heightened political tensions in the region.

The Falta Police have registered a case against her under multiple sections of law, including provisions related to unlawful assembly, assault on public servants, incitement to violence, and offences under the Arms and Explosives Acts.

The allegations stem from an incident last Tuesday at Shatal Kolsa in Falta, where an unlawful gathering reportedly turned violent. Police arrested eight individuals in connection with attacks on security personnel and acts of provocation. A suo motu case was subsequently registered against 15 individuals, including Rezina Bibi.

Police officials told the media that the alleged plan to secure Jahangir Khan's release from custody was premeditated. Investigators claim that Rezina convened a meeting in the area a day before the incident, during which supporters allegedly decided to assemble near the police station and launch a coordinated attack aimed at freeing Jahangir from police custody.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
