New Delhi, August 9: After months of his disappearance, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency has released 12 seconds of footage showing newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei casually interacting with state officials. The video comes at a time when speculation over his health and whereabouts has re-emerged, threatening regional security amid ongoing peace talks with US. Though the news agency did not share much, it still raises a question: where and when was the video shot?

Khamenei remained in anonymity since the day he assumed the position of the new Supreme Leader of Iran when his father, Ayatollah Khamenei, was killed in the US-Israel joint attack in February. Mojtaba himself was injured badly, forcing him to find shelter in a place kept secret after the incident.

Mehr has not provided the date or location of the recording; the footage does not allow an independent assessment of his current health.

What does the video show?

The short video shows Khamenei seated in a room with several officials and advisers. He appears calm and speaks with those around him.

Mehr described the footage as the first video of Khamenei that it has released since he became Supreme Leader.

However, the video contains no clear indication of when it was filmed. It also does not identify the location. There are no visible details that would allow an independent verification of the circumstances in which the footage was recorded.

As a result, while the video appears to show Khamenei, it does not establish his present physical condition.

Why have questions about his health emerged?

Khamenei took charge during a period of major political and military uncertainty in Iran.

Since then, Iranian authorities have largely communicated his position through official statements, messages and announcements attributed to him.

His prolonged absence has fuelled speculation about his health and whereabouts.

Several reports have claimed that Khamenei has suffered health problems or required medical treatment. Some of these reports have come from Iranian opposition-linked outlets and Israeli media.

Israeli media, including Channel 14, have made more serious claims. Some reports have alleged that Khamenei was recently hospitalised and remains in a critical condition. Other reports have suggested that he could die within days.

However, none of these claims has been independently verified.

Has Iran confirmed that Khamenei is ill?

Iranian authorities have not announced that Khamenei is seriously ill, hospitalised or unable to carry out his duties.

The release of the video also does not amount to an official confirmation about his health. It only shows footage that Iranian state-linked media says depicts the Supreme Leader.

The timing of the release is significant because questions about Khamenei's health have increased in recent days. By releasing the footage, Iranian media has provided a visual indication of Khamenei's presence, but it has not addressed the specific claims being made about his health.

What has Donald Trump said?

US President Donald Trump has also commented on Khamenei's status.

Trump recently said that Khamenei remained "completely involved" in matters connected with negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

That statement provides an assessment from the US side, but it does not independently establish Khamenei's physical condition.

Why does Khamenei's health matter?

Khamenei's position makes his health particularly important for Iran's political system and its decision-making process.

He became Supreme Leader during an extraordinary period for Iran, following the killing of his father and other members of his family in the opening phase of the US-Iran war.

Iranian reports at the time also described Mojtaba Khamenei as "wounded", although they did not provide detailed information about the nature or seriousness of any injuries.

Since then, his limited public appearances have created a gap between official statements about his role and independently verifiable information about his condition.

The latest video attempts to fill part of that gap, but it leaves several questions unanswered.

What happens next?

The renewed speculation comes as Iran faces continued pressure over negotiations involving the Strait of Hormuz and its wider confrontation with the United States and Israel.

Khamenei's health and ability to exercise his authority could become an important political issue if questions about his absence continue.

For now, the available evidence remains limited. Mehr has released a short video that it

identifies as showing Mojtaba Khamenei, but without a date, location or independent verification, the footage cannot establish his current health condition.
