New Delhi, June 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, marking a historic milestone in the country’s political history by surpassing the tenure of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
With an uninterrupted tenure of 4,399 days in office, Modi achieved the record on Wednesday, having first assumed office in May 2014 and subsequently secured a third consecutive term following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The achievement has drawn congratulatory messages from leaders across the world, reflecting India's growing global stature under Modi’s leadership which ushered in political stability in India.
Among those who extended their greetings was US Senator John Cornyn, co-chair of the Senate India Caucus. Congratulating Modi on social media platform X, Cornyn described his tenure as transformative and highlighted the democratic mandate behind his leadership.
"Congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi on becoming India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister — 4,399 days of leadership earned through the trust of 1.4 billion people across three democratic mandates," Cornyn wrote.
The Republican Senator from Texas also remarked that Modi’s leadership has been "nothing short of transformational," reflecting the deepening ties between India and the United States during the past decade.
The milestone also prompted messages from several other global leaders. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka described Modi's achievement as a testament to the trust repeatedly placed in him by the people of India. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape called him a role model in leadership, while Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar praised India's growing influence in global affairs under his stewardship.
Over the last 12 years, Modi has overseen significant economic, social and diplomatic developments. During his tenure, India has emerged as the world's fifth-largest economy, expanded its digital infrastructure, strengthened welfare delivery systems and increased its engagement in global governance forums.
India's foreign policy outreach has also intensified under Modi, with the country positioning itself as a leading voice of the Global South while strengthening strategic partnerships with major powers and developing nations alike.
As Modi enters the next phase of his third term, the focus is expected to remain on economic growth, infrastructure expansion, technological innovation, social welfare programmes and India's long-term vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The record not only underscores Modi's political longevity but also marks a defining moment in contemporary Indian politics, highlighting a period of significant transformation in the country's domestic and international trajectory. Back home, the milestone was marked by congratulatory messages from President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union ministers, chief ministers and NDA leaders.
At an NDA conclave held at Bharat Mandapam, alliance partners passed a resolution praising Modi's leadership and reaffirming their commitment to the vision of a Viksit Bharat. Thanking the President and NDA leaders for their wishes, Modi said the achievement belonged to the people of India and reflected their trust in democratic governance.
BJP leaders and ministers across the country also organised prayers and special events to mark the occasion, while senior NDA leaders hailed Modi's tenure for providing political stability, strengthening national security, accelerating development and enhancing India's global stature.
