Could AI Bring GTA 6 To PC Earlier? Former Rockstar Director Weighs In
Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij believes the threat of AI-assisted unofficial PC ports could encourage Rockstar to shorten the gap between console and PC releases.
Rockstar Games could bring Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI to PC sooner than expected as artificial intelligence creates new challenges for game developers. Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij believes the possibility of AI-assisted unofficial PC ports could encourage the studio to reconsider its traditional release strategy.
Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6. The game is currently scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. However, Vermeij believes the growing capabilities of AI tools could give the company another reason to bring the PC version closer to the console release.
"Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026. We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve," said Rockstar Games in an official note released earlier this month.
How AI Could Change Rockstar's PC Release Strategy
Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, a British video game journalist website, Vermeij discussed how AI tools could potentially allow people to adapt the console version of GTA 6 for PC. He said, "I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC."
Vermeij acknowledged that an unofficial AI-assisted port would not match the quality of Rockstar's official PC version. However, he warned that it could still affect the company's sales by giving some PC players an alternative to waiting for the official release. He also suggested that creating such a port would not be cheap or straightforward. According to Vermeij, the process could require tens of thousands of dollars in AI tokens.
Discussing how this possibility could influence Rockstar's strategy, he added, "I wouldn't be surprised if there was an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together." However, Vermeij left Rockstar in 2009 and does not know what the company is currently planning. His comments are an industry perspective, not confirmation of a change in Rockstar's release strategy.
GTA 6 PC Release Date Remains Unconfirmed
Rockstar has traditionally prioritised console releases before bringing its major games to PC. Grand Theft Auto V, for example, launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, while its PC version arrived in April 2015, around 19 months later. A GamesBeat report published in October 2026, citing four industry sources familiar with Rockstar's plans, suggested that GTA 6 could arrive on PC in the first quarter of 2027. The sources requested anonymity, and Rockstar did not respond to the publication's request for comment.
If accurate, this timeline would mean a considerably shorter wait for PC players than the one they experienced with GTA V. However, the reported release window remains unconfirmed.
Why Rockstar May Still Delay the PC Version
Despite the possibility of an earlier release, Rockstar has reasons to maintain its staggered launch strategy. Developing and optimising a game for one platform at a time can make the process easier for the studio. In his interview, Vermeij also pointed out that developers may find it easier to work on one version of a game at a time. A PC release requires optimisation across different processors, graphics cards, memory configurations and hardware setups, unlike consoles, which have fixed hardware specifications.
There is also a commercial consideration. Releasing the console version first allows Rockstar to target its initial audience before bringing the game to another platform. For now, Rockstar's official platform information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced. Neither Rockstar nor its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has confirmed a PC release date.
Vermeij's comments raise an interesting possibility about how AI could influence the gaming industry. However, whether this will change Rockstar's plans remains to be seen. PC players will have to wait for an official announcement before treating any release window as final.
