Kolkata, June 26: The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill had faced severe opposition from the previous Trinamool Congress administration of West Bengal under then chief minister Mamata Banerjee. However, after the BJP won power in the state, the proposed UCC bill has come under renewed focus.
With the UCC bill scheduled to be tabled in the Legislative Assembly next Monday, former Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir issued a message on social media, urging everyone to abide by the country's laws. He appealed to people not to incite violence and asked religious clerics including Maulanas and Maulvis to refrain from delivering inflammatory speeches on the issue.
"I urge all Muslims to strictly adhere to the laws of the land. Muslims across the globe are being targeted due to Islamophobia. One must avoid the rash impulse to roll up one's 'lungi' or 'pyjama' and rush onto the streets at the instigation of others," the Debra MLA said in a message on social media.

He also advised against making derogatory remarks or provocative statements regarding other communities. He said, "Even if you do not consider yourself, stay away from any kind of trouble for the sake of your children and family."
Humayun Kabir, who had broken away from the Trinamool Congress to form his own political outfit - the Aam Janata Unnayan Party - remarked that people of all religions and communities in the country should respect other faiths.
A special session of the West Bengal assembly has been convened for next Monday with the Uniform Civil Code bill scheduled to be tabled on that day. The Uniform Civil Code has already been implemented in Uttarakhand and Gujarat, while the bill was passed in Assam last May.
