New Delhi, June 8: After responding to Israel’s Beirut strike on June 7 with intense airstrikes, Iran on Monday announced a halt to its offensive operations, while issuing a stern warning of a full-scale war in the Middle East if the attacks continue. Hours later, as bombings rocked both sides, US President Donald Trump claimed that both countries were seeking an immediate “CEASEFIRE”, underlining the urgency of securing a final deal with Iran to end the war.

The Iranian military's joint command on Monday declared the suspension of airstrikes against Israel, stating that if Israel or its supporters carried out any further “aggression and hostile acts”, including in southern Lebanon, then “much more severe and crushing measures than before will follow,” reported news agency AP.

This marked the first exchange of strikes since the US brokered a ceasefire with Tehran two months ago. Iran warned that continued attacks could drag the Middle East back into a full-scale war.

Posting on his social media platform, Donald J. Trump said: “Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE! Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way. The Blockade will remain in place, and in full force and effect, until a ‘Final Deal’ is reached. Things should move quickly. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Through Sunday's attacks, Israel appeared to openly defy Trump, who has been trying to keep the focus on peace talks with Iran as America continues to bear the economic burden of the conflict. Last week, Trump reportedly even called Benjamin Netanyahu (widely known by his nickname, Bibi) “stupid”. Even on Monday, Trump maintained that “I call all the shots”, before posting his “CEASEFIRE” message on Truth Social. However, even this does not guarantee an end to the conflict.

Why Trump and Bibi Have Different Responses Now?

Although Trump and Netanyahu launched the war against Iran with a co-ordinated attack on February 28, 2026, the two leaders appear to have taken different paths since then. Their differences are largely driven by politics at home.

Netanyahu is facing elections later this year and is under pressure from many Israelis to respond strongly to Hezbollah's attacks in northern Israel. He also does not want to be seen as blindly following Trump's wishes.

Trump, on the other hand, is preparing for Congressional elections in November. He wants to end the conflict because it has hurt the global economy and led to higher prices for consumers.

What Happened After Trump Brokered the Peace Deal

Despite the ceasefire efforts, tensions have remained high. Iran continues to control the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments, contributing to higher energy prices worldwide. Israel has kept up its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon and has advanced further into Lebanese territory.

Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, launched attacks on Israel and warned that ships linked to Israel could be targeted in the Red Sea.

With peace talks making little progress, fighting continuing on several fronts, and new groups becoming involved, fears are growing that the conflict could escalate into a wider regional war once again.
