Tensions between Washington and Tehran are unlikely to ease off soon. However, US President Donald Trump has made a slightly positive remark in a viral video, saying he would be honoured to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. While responding to a question by a media person in the White House, Trump suggested that a face-to-face meeting could be possible if both countries succeed in reaching a deal, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme.

“I don’t want to meet, but if I did meet, I’d be honoured to meet him,” said Trump when a reported asked, "we've heard you want to meet with the new ayatollah, (0:05) the new supreme leader."

“If we make a deal, it’s possible that I would meet him. I’d be OK with that,” the US president said.

Trump Adopts Softer Tone Towards Khamenei

Referring to Khamenei, Trump described the Iranian leader as “probably a professional” and said he has “a very good reputation in some circles”. The president also acknowledged that Khamenei remains a controversial figure internationally. However, he compared the criticism directed at the Iranian leader to criticism he has faced himself.

“Some people say bad, but a lot of people say bad about me. It’s totally false, of course,” Trump said.

The remarks suggest that Washington may be trying to keep diplomatic channels open as negotiations continue.

Nuclear Programme Remains Central Issue

Despite his willingness to engage diplomatically, Trump maintained his firm position on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Iran’s nuclear programme remains one of the most contentious issues in relations between Tehran and Washington. Western countries have long expressed concern that Iran could use highly enriched uranium to develop nuclear weapons, an accusation that Tehran denies.

During his comments, Trump claimed the United States remains closely monitoring Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.

“We could get it right now. I don’t think they could stop us if we want it. But there’s no reason to,” he said.

Trump also claimed that the uranium is effectively contained and under surveillance.

According to the president, the material is “entombed” and being monitored.

“We have cameras on it,” he added.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

Trump’s remarks come as the United States and Iran continue discussions aimed at reducing tensions and addressing concerns surrounding Tehran’s nuclear activities.

While significant differences remain between the two sides, Trump’s comments indicate that Washington is leaving the door open for direct engagement at the highest level if negotiations produce a breakthrough.

Any meeting between a sitting US president and Iran’s Supreme Leader would be highly significant and could mark a major development in relations between the two countries, which have remained strained for decades.
