Colombo, June 22: Two senior US officials, including Pacific Air Forces Commander General Kevin Schneider and Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S. Paul Kapur, have arrived in Sri Lanka on separate visits aimed at strengthening defence, security, and economic cooperation between the two countries.
According to the US Embassy in Colombo, both officials arrived on Sunday and will remain in Sri Lanka until June 24.

The visits come at a time of increasing geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean region, where China has significantly expanded its infrastructure investments and maritime presence. Washington has been intensifying its engagement with regional partners, including Sri Lanka, as part of its broader Indo-Pacific strategy.
During his three-day visit, General Schneider is expected to hold discussions with senior Sri Lankan government and defence officials, including representatives of the Defence Ministry and the Sri Lanka Air Force. Talks will focus on enhancing cooperation in air and maritime domain awareness, cybersecurity, disaster response, and regional security.
Schneider, who oversees all US Air Force personnel and assets across the Indo-Pacific region, is visiting Sri Lanka as part of ongoing efforts to deepen defence ties between the two nations.
The US Embassy described the visit as a reflection of the growing strength of the bilateral defence partnership, highlighting continued cooperation through joint military exercises, personnel exchanges, and regular high-level engagements.
"The United States recognises Sri Lanka as an essential partner in the collective effort to preserve peace, security, and prosperity across the region," the embassy said.
Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary Kapur is scheduled to meet senior Sri Lankan leaders to discuss regional developments and security cooperation. He will also engage with business leaders and representatives of US companies operating in Sri Lanka to explore opportunities for expanding bilateral trade and investment.
According to the embassy, Kapur's visit underscores the administration of US President Donald Trump and its commitment to strengthening partnerships that promote economic prosperity and security while deepening ties with Sri Lanka as a key partner in the Indian Ocean region.
The twin visits are being viewed as a significant step in advancing US-Sri Lanka relations amid evolving strategic dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
