US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has claimed that President Donald Trump secured a commitment from China that it would not provide “material support” to Iran during recent high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Speaking to ABC News, Greer said Trump’s focus during the discussions was to ensure Beijing stayed away from backing Tehran amid rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over the Strait of Hormuz.

Greer clarified that the United States did not ask China for direct military involvement or assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Instead, Washington wanted assurances that Beijing would not interfere with US efforts or extend support to Iran. “That’s a commitment he obtained and confirmed,” Greer said during the interview.

The Trump administration also highlighted that China has a strong economic interest in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, as a significant portion of global oil shipments passes through the route. Greer said Chinese officials made it clear during the meetings that they wanted the waterway reopened without restrictions, military control, or tolls.

The remarks come amid continuing geopolitical tensions involving Iran and growing US efforts to prevent further escalation in the region. While China has publicly called for peace and de-escalation, Beijing has so far avoided direct involvement in the conflict.
