New Delhi, August 19: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reacted to a viral video in which a woman tourist objected to traffic restrictions in Kargil, saying, “We are Gen Z, we won’t tolerate this.” Abdullah responded with a humorous remark, comparing the statement to the phrase, “Jaante ho mera baap kaun hai?”

The woman alleged that tourists had been stopped for around five hours due to a VIP movement.

In a post on X, Abdullah shared the video and said, “This ‘we are Gen Z’ has become the new ‘jaante nahi ho mera baap kaun hai’.” He said people had made the term “Gen Z” scary by using it to get things done in their favour.

The clip showed the woman arguing with security personnel at the Minimarg checkpoint in Ladakh’s Kargil region.

Tourists waiting for hours

The incident appeared to have taken place on July 25, when traffic restrictions were imposed near the Zojila-Gumri route due to the movement of senior officials, The Times of India reported, quoting sources.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth were scheduled to travel by air. However, due to bad weather, they had to fly by helicopter to Gumri and then travel to Kargil by road, a senior police official said.

Traffic was stopped to allow their convoy to pass, resulting in delays for tourists and other travellers, police sources said.

The woman in the video said the group had been waiting for about five hours.

“We are paying out of our pockets to come here and they are doing this to us. Earlier they used to do this to Kashmiris only, now they are doing it with tourists as well,” she said.

She then staged a dharna at the checkpoint and allegedly stopped an Army convoy from entering a transit camp.

District officials later intervened and persuaded her to end the protest. The tourists were allowed to continue their journey after the VIP movement was over.

Criticism of the incident

The woman’s comments and behaviour towards security personnel have been criticised, with former Army officers calling her conduct towards men in uniform unwarranted.

The incident has also sparked a wider debate on social media over how tourists should respond to restrictions at sensitive border crossings.

Kargil Vijay Diwas

The traffic restrictions were imposed in view of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, when the region hosted commemorative events to mark India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War and pay tribute to the soldiers who fought during Operation Vijay.
