The high-stakes Maharashtra Legislative Council elections concluded on Monday, with the ruling Mahayuti alliance, consisting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) of Ajit Pawar faction and Shiv Sena of Eknath Shinde, making a landmark victory. The BJP-NCP-Shiv Sena swept 16 out of 17 seats.
Voting for the 17 seats took place on June 18. However, the Mahayuti alliance had already gained a head start, with six of its candidates elected unopposed before polling even began.
The BJP emerged as the biggest winner, securing 11 seats. Its allies also performed strongly, with Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde winning three seats and NCP headed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar capturing two.

BJP Rebel Defeats Mahayuti Candidate
The only setback for the alliance came in Nashik. Independent candidate Gokul Gite, a BJP rebel, defeated the official Shiv Sena candidate Narendra Darade.
These included Ravindra Phatak from Thane and Dushyant Chaturvedi from Yavatmal representing Shiv Sena; Aniket Tatkare from Raigad-Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg and Vikram Kakade from Pune representing the NCP; and Arun Lakhani from Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli and Prajakt Tanpure from Ahilyanagar representing the BJP.
Among the BJP's winning candidates were Suhas Shirshat, Avinash Brahmankar, Dhairyashil Kadam, Rajendra Raut, Basavaraj Patil, Rajiv Potdar, Nandkishor Mahajan, Pravin Pote and Amar Rajurkar, who secured victories across key constituencies in the state.
Shiv Sena's Saiyed Khan also registered a comfortable win from the Parbhani-Hingoli constituency.
Several Mahayuti candidates were elected unopposed, highlighting the alliance's strength in local bodies.
The Mahayuti's sweeping victory in the Legislative Assembly highlights the influence of the three party's growing dominance. Political commentators beleive that the outcomes of local body elections often reflects the organisational reach and political influence of parties beyond Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
MVA - Congress, Shiv Sena of Thackarey, NCP of Sharad Pawar
Meanwhile, the Mahayuti's sweeping victory has dealt another setback to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The results come at a difficult time for Shiv Sena (UBT), which has already been rocked by a fresh wave of defections in the Lok Sabha. A group of rebel MPs, led by Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, recently aligned themselves with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, further weakening Uddhav Thackeray's camp.
Facing growing challenges to maintain its political strength and relevance, the party nevertheless sought to project resilience. Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council and senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve said the party had put up a strong fight despite adverse circumstances.
"We fought well. We are fighting to protect the Constitution," Danve said, signalling that the opposition intends to continue its political battle against the ruling alliance despite the latest setbacks.
