Ayodhya, June 21: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged financial irregularities in donations received at the Ram Temple has instructed officials of the temple trust and other functionaries not to leave Ayodhya, according to sources associated with the temple.

The directive was reportedly issued by the three-member SIT before its members departed for Lucknow on Sunday.

Sources said investigators have identified discrepancies in records related to gold and silver jewellery, diamonds, and other precious stones offered by devotees at the temple. During questioning, several trust office-bearers allegedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding the inventory, storage, and accounting of these valuable offerings.

The SIT is also examining possible irregularities during the Maha Kumbh Mela period in January and February 2025, when the Ram Temple witnessed an unprecedented surge in devotees. According to sources, nearly 10 lakh pilgrims visited the temple daily during the two-month period, while donation boxes were reportedly filled within hours, making the management and accounting of donations a key focus of the investigation.

Sources further claimed that all findings and statements recorded during the inquiry have been digitally documented. The SIT is expected to compile its final report before submitting it to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Investigators have also been sharing daily updates with the Chief Minister’s Office, they added.

The probe has expanded beyond allegations of donation misappropriation and now includes scrutiny of land purchases made by the temple trust and procurement of construction materials for the temple project.

According to sources, investigators are examining allegations that certain land parcels were purchased at prices significantly higher than prevailing market rates. The issue has previously been raised by opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party and the Aam Aadmi Party.

The Uttar Pradesh government constituted the SIT on June 13 following a request from the temple trust amid allegations of misuse of donations received at the Ram Temple.

The SIT comprises Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S, and Finance Department Special Secretary Neel Ratan.
