New Delhi, June 25: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has notified a revision in passport application fees, increasing charges for both fresh passports and reissues under the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026. The revised fee structure will come into effect from July 1, 2026. This comes a day after the MEA stated that a passport does not prove the citizenship of an individual.
According to a notification issued by the ministry, applicants seeking a fresh passport or reissue of a 36-page passport under the normal scheme will now have to pay Rs 2,500, up from the existing fee of Rs 1,500. Under the Tatkal scheme, the fee has been increased to Rs 5,000 from Rs 3,500.
Similarly, the fee for a 60-page passport has been raised to Rs 3,500 under the normal category and Rs 6,000 under the Tatkal category. The previous charges were Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000, respectively.

The revised schedule also increases charges for replacement passports issued in lieu of lost or damaged documents. For a 36-page passport, the fee has been fixed at ₹5,000 under the normal category and Rs 7,500 under Tatkal. For a 60-page passport, the corresponding charges will be Rs 6,000 and Rs 8,500.
For minor applicants below the age of eight years, the fee for a fresh or reissued 36-page passport has been set at Rs 1,750 under the normal scheme and Rs 4,250 under Tatkal.

The government has retained a 10 per cent discount on fresh passport applications submitted by children up to eight years of age and senior citizens above 60 years.
The move marks the first major revision of passport application fees in recent years and is expected to impact millions of applicants seeking travel documents across the country.
